Durban North Primary School - located in Sunfield Place, Durban North - has reached a significant milestone with the celebration of its fiftieth year in education. The school originally known as Sunningdale Junior Primary School opened its doors to welcome 111 Grade 1 pupils in January 1960. Miss M.I. Meyer was the first principal and the school originally consisted of three grade one classes. In 1964, three new classrooms and a general purpose room were built; the school numbers had now reached 233.
The school reached its peak of 308 pupils spread through nine classes in 1971, however the numbers dropped to 206 owing to the opening of Glenashley, La Lucia Junior Primary and a Junior Primary section at Virginia Primary in 1972 . In 1996 Sunningdale Junior Primary School was renamed Durban North Junior Primary School. The uniform was changed from brown and white gingham check to blue and white gingham check in 1999.
The first Grade 4’s were admitted in 2001, which is when the school changed its name to Durban North Primary School. We celebrated our first Grade 7 pupils as they passed on to high school at the end of 2004. A new 25m swimming pool was built in 2010, much to the delight of the Grade 7 pupils. DNPS entered the technological age when state of the art interactive boards and projectors were installed in all classrooms.
